Day 27 of Free to BE YOUng: Speak Kindly to You.
The opposite of sweet talking yourself or doing happy talk is:
“I can’t” instead of possibly the truth which is, “I won’t.”
“I forgot” instead of “My perfect memory will bring this information back to my conscious mind soon.”
“I’ll try” instead of “I’m learning to do…”
“Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I’ll go eat worms!” instead of “I’m becoming more lovable every day in every way.”
One of my young piano students returned after 9 months away. He came in saying, “I forgot everything.”
I said, “I doubt that. Let’s see what you remember.”
Even as he successfully identified a quarter note as “the real note”, and the whole note by demonstrating it with 4 head nods, etc. He kept up his mantra of: “I don’t remember anything.” He knew a quarter rest was a “break” and he identified more and more musical terms as the lesson progressed. And after only three repeats he played his last pieces perfectly.
I kept up my mantra of, “You are remembering everything.”
My work is cut out with him, not only as a piano teacher but also as a spiritual guide who gives one liners of empowerment.
Do give yourself one liners of empowerment. Be a spiritual teacher for yourself. Watch your “Self Talk”, a phrase by the way that doesn’t appeal to me. I prefer: “Be aware and be kind to yourself. Empower yourself with positive thoughts. Do Happy Talk!
My second favorite book as a child was The Little Engine That Could. I loved going around the house as a 3 year old chugging and chanting, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” Once a year or so I chug around the house in my silliness continuing that wonderful chant for self-development and self-love.
Lifelong learning leads to Super-Aging and I think we can, I know we can!
