(I’m catching up with some missed days of FREEtobeYOUng.blog with music that inspired me and motivated me to empowerment.)
We Shall Overcome was not only a societal anthem for me in the 60’s, it became a personal anthem. I sang it often with friends and in large groups, churches, demonstrations and I also sang it alone in the car. This anthem inspired me to make a stance is several situations for a variety of people I knew who were receiving discrimination. The words sustained me while working for the students who were discriminated against in school.
Those same words sustained me. It actually became a personal anthem at a time when I needed to let go of methods of living that would never bring me peace. I learned to overcome shyness, passivity, and a placating nature that caused misery in my life.
